Healthcare office insurance

Outpatient practices, dental and vision offices, therapy and counseling practices, chiropractic, and small clinics. Not hospitals, and not surgical centers — those underwrite on a different track entirely. The distinguishing exposure is patient records and clinical liability sitting on top of an ordinary office.

    WHAT A PRACTICE USUALLY CARRIES

    What a practice usually carries

Kavana Insurance Inc. places the business side of a practice. Medical malpractice is a specialty market and is often written separately or through a specialist.

    01

    General liability

Patient and visitor injury in your space and third-party property damage. This is premises and operations liability — it is not clinical malpractice.

    02

    Property and equipment

Tenant improvements, chairs, imaging and diagnostic equipment, and inventory. Equipment breakdown is usually an endorsement rather than an automatic inclusion.

    03

    Workers’ compensation

Needlestick, lifting, and exposure claims for clinical and front-office staff, rated by payroll and class code.

    04

    Cyber and regulatory

Protected health information changes the math. Breach response, notification costs, and regulatory defense sit on a cyber/privacy form. HIPAA obligations do not go away because a policy exists.

    WHAT IT IS

Where the line sits with malpractice

Professional liability for clinical care — medical malpractice — is its own market. Some practices carry it through a specialty carrier or a group program and place the business lines with us. We will tell you plainly when a placement belongs with a specialist.

Lease requirements are the other common driver. Medical office leases routinely specify limits, additional insured status for the landlord and property manager, and waiver of subrogation. Send the lease.

A practice is an office with clinical liability and patient records on top. Both of those additions change underwriting, and one of them changes it a lot.
